Job summary

AtlantiCare is seeking a Physician Assistant to support a cardiothoracic surgery team under the supervision of the surgeon or anesthesiologist. You will gather data, help implement therapeutic plans, and advocate for patients within the care system.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a physical science, completion of an accredited PA/surgical PA program, and appropriate certifications. ACLS and BLS/HCP certifications are required, with state licensure pending.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited physician assistant/surgical assistant program.
• Certification or eligible for NCCPA and NJ licensure.
• Appointment as an Allied Health Practitioner with the Medical Center.
• ACLS required (not required in urgent care settings).
• BLS/HCP required.

Responsibilities

• Assist surgeon in diagnostic and therapeutic tasks for cardiothoracic cases.
• Gather data to inform the surgeon's therapeutic plan and care decisions.
• Advocate for patients within the medical care system and coordinate with physicians.
• Contribute to performance improvement and teamwork initiatives.

Job description

JOB OVERVIEW

The Physician Assistant performs diagnostic and therapeutic tasks under the supervision and responsibility of the surgeon or anesthesiologist. The Physician Assistant assists in gathering the data necessary for implementation of the surgeons or anesthesiologists therapeutic plan. This position is also responsible for acting as the patient’s advocate in the medical care system, serving as advisor and liaison between patients and physicians. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in a physical science from an accredited institution.
• Completion of an accredited physician assistant/surgical assistant program.
• Certified or eligible for certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants and the New Jersey State Board of Education and Licensure.
• Appointment as an Allied Health Practitioner with the Medical Center in accordance with the Medical Staff Bylaws.
• ACLS required (not required in urgent care settings).
• BLSHCP required.

EXPERIENCE & EXPECTATIONS

• Minimum two years recent experience in cardiothoracic surgery and/or surgery.
• Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; skill required within 30-60 days from date of hire.
• This position will be structured as 0.6 virtual and 0.4 oncologist.
• Demonstrates the competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.

ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including infectious disease, blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.

Job duties involve extensive standing and walking, including stairs; lifting approximately 25‑50 pounds frequently, 50‑100 pounds with assistance, pushing and pulling heavy equipment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to department leadership and may supervise incumbents as assigned. Essential functions of this position are listed on the department specific Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
