Job summary

University Hospital is seeking a Physician Assistant to support direct patient care under physician supervision in Newark, NJ. You will assist in outpatient processes, participate in rounds, help prepare preoperative evaluations, and support wound care and postoperative follow‑ups.

The role includes collaborating with surgical residents and attending surgeons, positioning patients for procedures, and providing counseling to patients and families.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s in Health Science or related field.
  • Graduation from a PA program approved by CAAHEP.
  • Certification from NCCPA.
  • New Jersey PA license from the State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Prior experience in clinical medicine is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in routine outpatient office needs and answer patient questions.
  • Assist in initial patient assessment in outpatient settings, including data collection from medical records.
  • Support preoperative history and physicals.
  • Take part in daily rounds with surgical team and help document treatment plans.
  • Provide patient education and family counseling with the care team.
  • Assist in operating room procedures and patient positioning, and aid recovery transfer.
  • Support wound care including dressings, sutures, drains.
  • Follow up on outpatient care with post-operative notes and recommended tests.

About The Role

The primary purpose of the Physician Assistant position while under the direction and supervision f a licensed physician is to assist in direct patient care, obtain and record medical data, provide counseling and patient education, and assist in those tasks delineated for physician assistant

What You’ll Do
  • Assists in the routine daily needs of the outpatient office. Assist in answering questions from patients.
  • Assists in the initial assessment of patients in the outpatient setting. This includes administrative as well as clinical (i.e., reviewing medical documentation brought/faxed from outside facilities) data collection and processing.
  • Assists in preparation of History and Physical examinations prior to surgery.
  • Makes rounds and examines patients on a daily basis. Works with the surgical residents to see that daily chart entries are madefor each patient. Assist in writing appropriate medical orders. Communicates with the attending surgeon a least once daily, to confirm the treatment plans for the patients.
  • Provides any assistance to the patients, within reasonable limits, to ensure a comfortable hospital experience. This includes, but not limited to, patient/family education and counseling in conjunction with the healthcare team.
  • Assists the surgeon in the operating room. Helps to position the patient, ensure proper application of the antithrombotic stockings and compressive devices prior to surgery. Helps with performing the surgery if a surgical resident is not available. Should be able to assist the surgical resident to suture closed the incision and facilitate the patient’s transfer to the recovery room at the completion of the surgery.
  • Physician Assistants will assist in wound care, including changing dressings, removing sutures/staples, pulling out drains, etc.
  • Assists in following-up on outpatient patient care. Sees patients in the outpatient office, writing follow-up notes, ordering appropriate post-operative follow-up tests.
What You’ll Bring
  • Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science or a related field.
  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant Program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Certification from the National Commission for Certification by Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • New Jersey Licensed from the State Board of Medical Examiners-Physician Advisory committee.
  • Prior experience in clinical medicine is preferred.

Compensation

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is PS/37S - $123,639.00 - $149,999.00 - $179,342.00 per year. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs. The expected salary range for this position is in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
