Job description

Summary

The VACIHS is seeking an experienced full-time permanent physician to serve as Associate Chief of Staff for Specialty Care, reporting directly to the Chief of Staff. This role involves oversight of all clinical operations and administrative functions for Internal Medicine subspecialties, including Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Dermatology, Infectious Disease, Pulmonary, and more.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional criteria listed in the job announcement. Candidates pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. Existing VA physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only if qualified citizens are unavailable)
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved institution
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
  • Completed residency training in an accredited program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Physical requirements as determined during pre-employment evaluation
Duties
  • Lead a Whole Health System of care, empowering Veterans to manage their health and well-being
  • Supervise physician staff, providers, and administrative personnel
  • Engage in teaching and program development, including an academic appointment with the University of Iowa College of Medicine and Des Moines University
  • Lead performance improvement initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals
  • Manage and direct large, complex organizational units
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the Specialty Care service line
  • Participate in policy development, credentialing, and privileging processes
  • Review clinical privileges and maintain provider performance data
  • Utilize performance reports and financial data for decision-making
  • Provide clinical leadership and handle complex cases and ethical issues
  • Manage human resources, including hiring, discipline, and performance evaluations
  • Promote a safe, infection-free environment and uphold EEO principles
  • Supervise physician and administrative staff, serving as a consultant and advisor
