Job description

The Physician Assistant (PA) reflects the mission, vision, and values of the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, adheres to the UI Health Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and accreditation standards. The PA functions as part of the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective advanced care to patients. The PA is responsible for the health outcomes of an assigned patient population and consults and confers with supervising physicians within the PA's scope of licensure. The PA is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment to receive clinical privileges at the University of Illinois Health System.

The Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Physician Assistant to join the Division of Plastics, Reconstructive, and Cosmetic Surgery.

Duties & Responsibilities

Scope of Practice:

  • Works within the Bylaws of the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System and adheres to hospital and divisional policies.
  • Collaborates with other providers in patient care.
  • Performs accurate history and physical examinations, comprehensive or episodic health assessments, and develops patient care plans.
  • Performs procedures according to clinical privileges.
  • Provides prevention strategies and manages acute and chronic health problems.
  • Orders and interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within scope of practice.
  • Prescribes medications, diets, supplies, prosthetic devices, and other home health aids or medications as per clinical privileges.
  • May perform other clinical duties within scope during emergencies.

Professional:

  • Uses evidence-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision-making.
  • Participates in peer review and competency assessments.
  • May lead or assist in research activities.
  • Maintains accountability for professional conduct.

Teaching:

  • Provides comprehensive education for patients and families.
  • Mentors and educates students, staff, and colleagues.
  • Engages in program development and acts as a resource in the practice setting.
  • Collaborates with management on clinical and systemic issues.
  • Participates in quality improvement and policy development initiatives.
  • Leads multidisciplinary teams for integrated patient care.
  • Contributes to protocol and guideline development and policy influence activities.
  • Performs other duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited PA program with a Master's or Doctoral Degree in Medical Science.
  • Current Physician Assistant license in Illinois.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Controlled substance licensure.
  • National Certification from NCCPA.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written).
  • Leadership, collaboration, interpersonal, educational, and change management experience.
  • Documentation skills for accurate billing.
