Qualifications

  • Active California PA license.
  • Active PA board certification.
  • DEA license (active or able to obtain).
  • Current BLS certification.
  • ACLS/PALS as applicable.
  • Experience in a neurosurgery clinic and inpatient hospital environment.
  • Experience as a first assistant in the operating room.
  • Ability to interpret radiologic imaging.
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical and surgical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Act as first assistant in neurosurgical cases and assist perioperative care.
  • Develop treatment plans and order imaging and diagnostic studies.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Physician Assistant to join a busy neurosurgery team. This position offers a combination of inpatient care, outpatient clinic, and operating room responsibilities, providing the opportunity to work closely with neurosurgeons throughout the full continuum of patient care.

Key Responsibilities
Inpatient & Hospital Care
  • Perform initial consultations and follow-up evaluations in inpatient and trauma settings
  • Round on hospitalized patients and evaluate patients in the emergency department and surgical floor
  • Assess and monitor patients in collaboration with neurosurgeons and other healthcare providers
  • Manage pre- and postoperative orders, prescriptions, treatments, diagnostic studies, and discharge planning
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation within the hospital EMR
  • Coordinate patient care with nursing staff and other hospital departments
  • Serve as a liaison between patients, families, and the neurosurgical team
Operating Room
  • Serve as a first assistant on neurosurgical cases
  • Assist with surgical and perioperative patient care
  • Participate in emergency surgical cases when necessary
Procedures may include:
  • Wound care, dressing changes, and suture removal
  • Shunt taps and shunt reprogramming
  • Lumbar punctures
  • Head frame application and removal
  • Brace application and removal
Outpatient Clinic
  • Evaluate new patients, postoperative patients, and routine follow-ups
  • Complete comprehensive histories and physical examinations
  • Develop treatment plans and order appropriate imaging and diagnostic studies
  • Review radiology and laboratory results and identify abnormalities
  • Present patients to the neurosurgeon when appropriate
  • Manage prescription refills and patient phone calls
  • Triage patient concerns appropriately
  • Maintain thorough and accurate EMR documentation
Schedule & Call
  • Approximately 40 hours per week
  • Weekend rounding approximately 1 out of every 3 weekends
  • Some additional weekend coverage may be required, averaging approximately 4-5 weekends over a three-month period
  • After-hours call coverage as needed
  • Weekend responsibilities include inpatient rounds in collaboration with the on-call neurosurgeon and occasional assistance with emergency surgical cases
Qualifications
Physician Assistants:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited PA program
  • Active California PA license
  • Active PA board certification
All Candidates:
  • Active DEA license or ability to obtain one prior to or upon hire
  • Current BLS certification
  • ACLS/PALS as applicable to the practice
  • Required controlled substance education/certification
  • Previous experience in a neurosurgery clinic and inpatient hospital environment
  • Previous experience as a first assistant in the operating room
  • Ability to interpret radiologic imaging
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical and surgical environment
