Job summary

UTHealth Houston is seeking a highly motivated Advanced Practice Provider (Physician Assistant) to join the Children’s Heart Institute ICU. You will deliver front-line patient care as part of a multidisciplinary team within an academic health center.

The role requires Texas PA licensure, NCCPA certification, BLS, and PALS, with a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant. Rotating 12-hour shifts and a strong focus on patient education and family engagement are included in the schedule.

Qualifications

  • Current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Current Physician Assistant certification issued by the NCCPA.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) is required and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced medical care to patients with congenital heart disease in an inpatient setting.
  • Follow delegation protocols and collaborate with other health care professionals to document and manage care.
  • Coordinate and implement the patient’s plan of care, including follow-up with consult services as needed.
  • Order and interpret basic labs, diagnostic tests and radiographs; ensure timely follow-up of results.
  • Perform regular bedside follow-up to evaluate and adjust the daily plan of care with supervising physician input.
  • Educate patients and families about medical processes, medications, nutrition, and preventive health care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
  • Respond to emergencies including code response and CPR in the ICU.

Schedule

Position Summary

Position Key Accountabilities
  • Provides advanced medical care to patients with congenital heart disease and complex acute, pre-/post-surgical, and/or chronic health conditions in an inpatient setting.
  • Follows established delegation protocols to manage specific patient problems. Formulates a plan of care in collaboration with other health care professionals and documents the plan in the patient’s medical record.
  • Coordinates, directs, and implements the patient’s plan of care including follow up with consult services as necessary.
  • Orders appropriate laboratory, diagnostic and radiographic tests. Provides initial preliminary interpretation of basic imaging and studies (i.e. ECG, XR). Ensures timely follow-up of all results.
  • Completes regular follow up at the patient bedside to evaluate the daily plan of care and informs the supervising physician of pertinent medical information or changes in patient status.
  • Facilitates patient and family education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition, and health promotion or preventative health care.
  • Maintains accurate & timely documentation.
  • Responds to emergency situations including code response throughout the hospital and assists in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and ECPR in the ICU.
  • Attends regularly scheduled education sessions to enhance understanding of a patient's physiology and improve overall patient care.
  • Performs within the scope of practice prescribed by licensure and certification.
  • Performs other duties and procedures as assigned to facilitate team productivity.

Certification/Skills
  • Current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant
  • Current Physician Assistant certification issued by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certified and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Minimum Education

Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant.

Minimum Experience

None; previous experience in the area of clinical focus preferred.

Physical Requirements

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
