Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center seeks an experienced Advanced Practice Provider to join the inpatient cardiology service line, primarily in the Advanced Heart Failure area with cross-coverage for other cardiology services. Expect 13-hour shifts with weekend/holiday coverage and nocturnal rotation.

The APP will manage patients with advanced heart failure, including post-transplant and LVAD cases, with opportunities for research and protocol development within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Graduate-level physician assistant education with ARC-PA accreditation.
  • Master's degree or higher in nursing or APRN education must align with clinical practice.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis.
  • Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills as appropriate.
  • Provides management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients and families.
  • Participates in quality initiatives and clinical research protocols to improve practice.
  • Collaborates in research projects and applies evidence-based practices to patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is looking to expand its Inpatient APP Cardiology Service Line. The APP will practice primarily with the inpatient Advanced Heart Failure Service but will be cross-trained to function across the entire inpatient cardiology service line. Rotating nocturnal and day coverage will be required. cross coverage will include the advanced heart failure/MCS/heart transplant and general cardiology services. 13-hour shifts with weekend/holiday coverage are required and will be divided among the APP teams.

The APP will primarily manage patients with advanced heart failure, some of whom are recovering from heart transplant or durable left ventricular assist device (LVAD) surgery or have been re-admitted with complications of these therapies.

Opportunities for professional development in a growing APP inpatient cardiology service line, including research and protocol development, are offered and highly encouraged. Collaboration with Advanced Heart Failure Cardiologists, Cardio-thoracic Surgeons, and Fellows with full participation in the heart transplant and LVAD multi-disciplinary teams is expected. Prior experience in cardiac critical care is a plus.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Education

Graduate of a master's degree or higher Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program. OR

Master's degree or higher in nursing, documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Licensure and Certification

Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification required. Licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board. OR

Licensure as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by Texas State Board of Nursing. Authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Current applicable Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) American Heart Association or American Red Cross Life Support certification(s) based on UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers.

JOB DUTIES
  • Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
  • Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate and based on specialty and training.
  • Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families, and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
  • Facilitates/participates in quality related initiatives and/or clinical research protocols through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings, to improve clinical and system practice performance.
  • Collaborates in research projects and protocols; and routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
