Eastern Colorado Health Care System is currently looking for a Physician – Anesthesiologist (Cardiac).

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only if no qualified citizens are available per VA Policy).
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent allopathic/osteopathic degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
• Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or one of the alternative pathways described in the policy.
• Board certification is preferred; experience in Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) and cardiac anesthesia is preferred.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements: Heavy lifting (≥45 lb), heavy carrying, straight pulling up to 4 h, pushing 1–2 h, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers (both hands required), walking up to 8 h, standing up to 8 h, repeated bending up to 4 h, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision corrected at 13–16 in, hearing (aid permitted).

Duties & Responsibilities

• Administer anesthesia care alone or supervise residents and certified registered nurse anesthetists.
• When working alone: examine the patient before and after anesthesia, write pre‑ and post‑anesthesia orders, confirm readiness for anesthesia, manage the anesthetic period, and follow patients as needed in the post‑anesthesia period.
• When supervising trainees: meet conditions for full personal control over anesthetic management, review patient history and records, personally examine the patient, confirm or revise treatment plans, perform anesthetic services or supervise residents/CRNAs, and be recognized by the patient as the attending anesthesiologist.
• Provide medical direction to CRNAs, evaluating pre‑anesthetic examinations, prescribing anesthesia plans (including IV lines, arterial, central lines, invasive monitoring, regional anesthesia, TEE), and participating in the most demanding procedures such as induction and emergence.
• Ensure procedures performed by qualified individuals, monitor anesthesia administration at frequent intervals, remain available for immediate diagnosis and treatment of emergencies, and provide post‑anesthesia care.
• Faculty responsibilities: prepare and deliver lectures, serve as preceptor, provide one‑on‑one instruction, and contribute to research for the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
