Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Physicians who have completed training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are satisfied.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training that is approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification.
• Residency options: (1) Accreditation under ACGME or AOA for the completed program; (2) One year of post‑medical‑school internship or first year of residency approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice; (3) Non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
• Residency exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in accredited programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis, with restricted duties under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Board certification and experience in clinical anesthesiology.
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications.
• Physical requirements: visual acuity including depth perception, hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, and the ability to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, and push for specified durations; lifting and carrying up to 15 pounds; transfer patients and objects; don protective clothing; manage potentially combative patients; rapid coordination of mental and muscular responses.
• Mature, flexible, and capable of working effectively in stressful situations with shifting priorities.
• Annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening, as a condition of employment.

Additional Requirements

• Preferred: Board‑certified Anesthesiologist comfortable providing anesthesia care for a variety of cases including robotics, vascular, ophthalmology, podiatry, plastics, urology, and endoscopy.
• Experience with the TEAM model and willingness to work with CRNAs.

Duties

• Open continuous announcement; remains open until September 30, 2026 or until all positions are filled.
• Initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications: June 15, 2026; subsequent cut‑offs every two weeks.
• Eligible applications received after 15 June 2026 will be referred at regular intervals or as vacancies arise.

• Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Administrative reporting to the Chief Surgical Service to ensure effective perioperative care delivery and compliance.
  • Clinical reporting to the Chief Anesthesiologist for daily assignments, clinics, and call schedules.
  • Follow facility by‑laws and policies for patient care management.
  • Supervises CRNAs, providing guidance, instruction, direction, and leadership in accordance with VHA Directive 1123, considering input from all team members.
  • Supervision of CRNAs during regular duty, after‑hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform on‑call duties and collaborate on fair and equitable call schedules.
  • Conduct appropriate pre‑operative evaluations and provide therapeutic interventions across units and programs.
  • Participate in anesthesia team meetings, treatment planning conferences, and multidisciplinary collaboration to enhance patient care coordination.
  • Order diagnostic tests, differentiate normal from abnormal findings, and make treatment decisions.
  • Ensure practices align with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies, national statutes, medical record documentation, CME requirements, and HIPAA policies.

• Pay: Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.
