What You’ll Do

PURPOSE: The Physical Therapist Assistant will work under the direct supervision of a Physical Therapist in an outpatient orthopedic setting, treating various orthopedic injuries including pre- and post-surgical conditions. The role involves working closely with Orthopedic Surgeons, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and other staff to provide injury management, rehabilitation, and facilitate a successful return to function for patients.

Accountabilities / Essential Functions

• Read all physical therapy documentation, including initial examination and plan of care.
• Note indications, contraindications, precautions, and safety considerations for the patient. Set goals and expected outcomes.
• Seek clarification from the physical therapist as needed.
• Review information in the medical record at each visit, including monitoring for changes in medical status, collecting current condition data, and comparing it to previous data and safety parameters.
• Identify when interventions are beyond the scope of work of the PTA and communicate significant changes or concerns to the physical therapist.
• Explain the rationale for interventions to achieve patient goals as per the plan of care.
• Provide interventions compliant with licensing requirements, APTA standards, and facility policies.
• Ensure patient and self-safety throughout care, utilizing risk management strategies.
• Maintain patient privacy, rights, and dignity, following HIPAA regulations.
• Deliver competent physical therapy interventions, including therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, assistive device adjustments, and application of physical agents.
• Document patient care accurately, completely, and timely, in accordance with legal and billing requirements.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent, successful completion of an APTA-accredited PTA program, and MA licensure upon hire.

Experience: Background in sports medicine or outpatient orthopedic environment preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of HIPAA, insurance policies, medical terminology, and electronic medical systems (e.g., Athena/Centricity, Medi-Tech).
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Proficiency with Windows-based software.
• Problem-solving ability, professionalism, and ability to multi-task.
