Laramie County School District #1 Physical Therapist

Purpose Statement

The job of Physical Therapist is done for the purpose/s of assessing students' physical development level; providing appropriate quality treatment to meet individualized student objectives; removing barriers to students' educational environments in order to improve their ability to access their education and increase functional independence; and providing recommendations for program development and student placement.

This job reports to Director of Special Services or designee.

Essential Functions
  • Advises students, parents and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success in school.
  • Assesses, evaluates and determines students' gross motor and development skills (e.g. gait, balance muscle strength, transferability, motor planning, coordination, etc.) for the purpose of determining their deficits and developing recommendations.
  • Assesses students' functional capabilities and home and/or classroom environment for the purpose of determining student's functional level and developing recommendations and/or placement.
  • Communicates with students, parents, teachers and/or other personnel for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts.
  • Consults with teachers, parents, physicians, appropriate staff, other personnel and/or outside professionals/agencies for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for services and/or making recommendations.
  • Coordinates with community agencies including medical, judicial, social service and mental health services for the purpose of determining appropriate treatments, etc. to meet the needs of specific students.
  • Develops motor reinforcement programs which may include motion, positioning, mobility, etc. for the purpose of increasing students' ability to receive a quality educational program.
  • Develops, implements and maintains caseload information and schedule for the purpose of ensuring that goals are achieved.
  • Facilitates meetings, processes, IEP meetings, etc. for the purpose of meeting curriculum guidelines and/or ensuring that State and Federal mandates are achieved.
  • Implements school wide program development and program evaluation (e.g. crisis intervention services, goals related to function and access to educational environment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring effective programs to assist children who experience physical, mental, social or emotional difficulties.
  • Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
  • Orders appropriate equipment as needed for the purpose of increasing student access to educational environments.
  • Participates in the development of students' IEP goals and objectives for the purpose of enhancing student success in school.
  • Participates in continuing education, meetings, workshops, and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and maintaining best practice of physical therapy.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials and documentation (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, internal audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and conveying information documentation according to State of Wyoming Practice Act, as well as Federal and District guidelines.
  • Presents information for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Provides interventions using Evidence Based Practice on direct, consultative, or collaborative basis at physical therapist's discretion with input from the IEP team for the purpose of supporting or enhancing a students' educational program according to the Wyoming Physical Therapy Practice Act.
  • Removes barriers to the student's educational environment (e.g. determining and recommending appropriate equipment, education of appropriate staff in equipment use, modifications and adaptations to environment and school-based activities) for the purpose of improving the student's ability to access his/her education and increase independence.
  • Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' functional goals.
  • Screens students for the purpose of determining the need for further individualized assessment.
  • Supervises and trains interns, practicum students, appropriate staff and others (e.g. carryout transfers, complete motor programs, mobility, use of equipment incorporating appropriate body mechanics,) for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth and achieving overall objectives of school's curriculum and achieving overall goal of student safety.
  • Trains appropriate related staff to carry out transfers, complete motor programs, assist with all mobility and use equipment incorporating appropriate body mechanics (e.g. to carry out transfers, complete motor programs, assist with all mobility, use equipment incorporating appropriate body mechanics, etc.) for the purpose of achieving the overall goal of student and staff safety.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices; facilitating meetings; and managing projects/programs.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: principles of physical therapy; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; age appropriate activities; treatment modalities and assessment; and codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.

Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Education: Master’s degree in job-related area.
Equivalency Required Testing: passing score on the National Physical Therapy Examination
