Scope of Practice

This role is located at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center - In‑Patient. The Physical Therapist provides general PT evaluations and treatments that impact patient’s functional abilities. The therapist oversees and directs the work of Physical Therapist Assistants and other designated staff members.

Key Essential Functions And Accountabilities

• Provides general physical therapy evaluations and treatments to a wide range of ages with varying diagnoses.
• Performs assessment, identifies therapy diagnosis, formulates treatment plans, and implements PT services with goals.
• Modifies therapy plans based on patient response to optimize outcomes.
• Reviews clinical records, attends care conferences, and remains in contact with referring providers and other health professionals.
• Collaborates to ensure medical equipment is arranged and care plans are established prior to discharge.
• Documents encounter findings and treatments in formats per SEARHC policies.
• Provides services in a timely manner and per regulatory requirements.
• Works with in‑patient and out‑patient populations in various settings.
• Directs support staff, students, or interns.
• Facilitates a healthcare partnership between providers, patients, and families.
• Develops and conducts patient education and therapy programs based on needs.
• Provides home exercise programs and ensures patient or caregiver understanding.
• Advises on self‑care methods to promote independence.
• Assists senior staff in administrative matters and clinic operations.
• Utilizes hospital computer systems for patient information and directives.
• Participates in efficient information flow via email and digital platforms.
• Provides summary of results, statistics, and metrics as required by management.
• Assists in acquisition and fit of durable medical equipment/devices.
• Maintains clinical equipment stocks and stays current with billing procedures.
• Maintains cleanliness of clinical space and educates staff and patients on functional limitations.
• Assists in committee duties and represents the Rehabilitation Services Department as requested.
• Provides therapy consultation and in‑services to interdisciplinary staff.
• Adheres to regulatory and practice standards set by the APTA.
• Follows SEARHC confidentiality and quality assurance standards.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Certifications, And Licenses Required

• Entry‑level qualifying master’s or doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program, or a graduate from an APTA‑approved program with 2 years of work and continuing education experience.
• Licensed Physical Therapist.
• Current Basic Life Support certification.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Clinical competency within 3 months of hire and subsequently every three years.
• High‑risk competency within 3 months of hire and subsequently every three years.

Experience Required

• Broad‑based clinical experience in multiple settings - preferred.

Knowledge Of

• MUSCULO‑SKELATAL physiology and assessment, including range of motion, gait, strength, biomechanics, and cognition.
• Neurologic assessment and treatment, and appropriate referral to other providers.
• General medical conditions and the ability to refer for non‑musculoskeletal issues.
• Various assessment, treatment planning, and therapeutic techniques for diverse populations.
• Regulations and practice standards, including billing mechanisms for Medicaid, Medicare, and third‑party payers.

Skills In

• Proper fitting and training on adaptive devices such as orthoses, seating equipment, and durable medical equipment.
• Clear written and spoken communication for documentation, staff training, and community outreach.
• Proficient use of information technology, including multiple software applications and imaging devices.

Ability To

• Communicate effectively with patients, families, teachers, and community members; translate complex PT information into simple language.
• Deliver treatment techniques and assist patient mobility safely.
• Exercise sound judgment in patient care, workplace safety, and employee relations.

Required Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association
• Driver License – State of Alaska
• Physical Therapist License – State of Alaska (Alaska State Board of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy)
