Juncos Hollinger Racing is seeking a dedicated and skilled Physical Therapist to join our team!

Responsibilities

Job Summary: The Physical Therapist plays a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the physical well-being, performance, and injury prevention strategies for both drivers and pit crewmembers. This specialized position supports the high-demand environment of motorsport racing, where physical endurance, strength, and quick recovery are essential. The role combines injury prevention, rehabilitation, performance optimization, and stress management to ensure the team achieves peak performance.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Driver Support

  • Injury Prevention: Design and implement tailored exercise programs to prevent injuries common in drivers, including neck strain, back issues, and repetitive motion injuries.
  • Strength and Conditioning: Develop and oversee training routines to maintain peak physical fitness, emphasizing core strength, neck muscles (to handle G-forces), and reaction times.
  • Mobility and Flexibility: Facilitate exercises to improve flexibility and range of motion for optimal performance during extended driving periods.
  • Recovery and Rehabilitation: Guide injured drivers through recovery programs using manual therapy, stretching, and functional exercises.
  • Pre-Race Preparation: Provide warm-ups, stretching, and mental focus techniques to ensure readiness before races.
  • Post-Race Recovery: Implement muscle recovery strategies such as massages, stretching, and cold therapy to alleviate soreness and fatigue after races.
  • Mental and Physical Integration: Develop strategies that enhance mental focus and physical training to meet the demands of IndyCar racing.

2. Pit Crew Support

  • Injury Prevention: Address risks associated with repetitive movements and high-intensity tasks during pit stops, creating preventive protocols.
  • Strength Training: Assist in maintaining strength, particularly in arms, legs, and back, to meet the demands of tire changes, refueling, and mechanical adjustments.
  • Recovery and Fatigue Management: Employ recovery protocols, including massage and stretching, to manage fatigue from long hours and high-pressure activity bursts.
  • Flexibility and Mobility: Provide flexibility training to support quick, precise movements in confined spaces.
  • Rehabilitation: Design individualized rehab programs for injured pit crew members to ensure a safe and efficient return to their roles.

3. Traveling with the Team

  • On-Site Support: Offer immediate assistance at races, including injury care, pre-race preparation, and post-race recovery.
  • Health Monitoring: Continuously assess the health and fitness of drivers and pit crew members to preemptively address emerging issues.

4. Stress and Fatigue Management

  • Hydration and Nutrition: Collaborate with nutritionists to ensure proper hydration and nutritional balance for peak performance.
  • Breathing and Relaxation Techniques: Teach stress management methods, such as breathing exercises, to enhance focus and composure during high-pressure situations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physical Therapy (DPT preferred).
  • State licensure as a Physical Therapist.
  • Experience in sports physical therapy, preferably in high-performance or motorsport environments.
  • Strong knowledge of injury prevention, rehabilitation techniques, and performance optimization.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a fast-paced team environment.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work flexible hours, including weekends.

Preferred Skills:

  • Certification in strength and conditioning (e.g., CSCS or equivalent).
  • Background in nutrition or collaboration with sports nutritionists.
  • Knowledge of motorsport-specific physical demands and rehabilitation.

Physical Requirements and Body Mechanics:

As part of our Indy racing team, this role involves physically demanding tasks that require strength, coordination, and safe body mechanics. Candidates must be able to:

  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally heavier loads, utilizing proper lifting techniques to prevent strain or injury.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform repetitive motions including bending, kneeling, and twisting, especially in tight or confined spaces, while maintaining proper posture and body mechanics.
Safely handle tools, equipment, and racing components, ensuring ergonomic handling to minimize risks of musculoskeletal injuries.
Be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment, often in varying weather conditions, while adhering to safety protocols related to body positioning and movement.
  • Proper body mechanics are critical to maintaining the safety and performance of our team. Training in safe lifting techniques and ergonomic practices will be provided to support team members' well-being.
