Job description

Responsibilities

• Identify deviations from normal or anticipated radiation levels to determine whether deviations are transient, instrument is defective, shielding has moved, or equipment or area has higher than expected radiation levels.
• Monitor requirements for controlling radiation in storage, decontamination, and control points of activity.
• Perform and interpret air, water, and surface radiation surveys.
• Maintain surveillance over contaminated tool, equipment, and storage areas.
• Maintain required Shipyard and radiological control technician qualifications as directed.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for Federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
• Within the Department of Defense, appointment of retired military members within 180 days following retirement is subject to 5 U.S.C. §3326.
• Males born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Must successfully complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.
• Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty; failure to maintain clearance may result in withdrawal of offer or removal.
• Must wear personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes) continuously during the work shift.
• May require travel from normal duty station to CONUS/OCONUS and to remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
• Work is performed in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, chemicals); must participate in medical surveillance programs.
• Must be able to lift and/or carry loads up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS‑05:

• Resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑04 grade level, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
• Specialized experience must demonstrate conducting radiation control surveillance of activities, personnel, or materials to ensure radiological control inspection requirements are recorded, maintained, and met.

To qualify for the GS‑04:

• Resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience in physical science or a related field, and six months of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑03 grade level.
• Specialized experience must demonstrate performing basic radiological control checks to ensure results of analysis or documented procedures are correctly recorded per standardized procedures and operations.

Education (substitutions for specialized experience):

• GS‑05: Successful completion of a full 4‑year course of study above high school level leading to a bachelor’s degree (major in an appropriate field of physical science) or at least 24 semester hours in physical science, engineering, or mathematics (excluding financial and commercial mathematics).
• GS‑04: Successful completion of 2 years of education above high school level with at least 12 semester hours in physical science, engineering, or mathematics (excluding financial and commercial mathematics).

Other Employment Conditions

• Position requires rotating shift work and may involve nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Overtime or night differential pay may be required.
• Position requires exposure to high noise levels.
• Position may be subject to an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements.
