Job description

Position Summary The K-8 Physical Education Teacher is responsible for fostering a lifelong appreciation for physical activity, health, movement, and wellness in a dynamic and inclusive environment. This educator will design and deliver age-appropriate, standards-aligned lessons that develop fundamental motor skills, spatial awareness, sportsmanship, and physical fitness across elementary and middle school grade levels. By creating a safe, active, and supportive gymnasium and outdoor environment, the teacher will inspire students to build confidence, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle habits that support academic success and overall well-being.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Instruction & Curriculum: Plan, prepare, and execute energetic, standards-based daily lessons (e.g., SHAPE America/State PE Standards) tailored to the developmental stages of K-8 students. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies-such as cooperative movement games, skill-building drills, fitness challenges, and modified team sports-to ensure high levels of physical activity and engagement.
  • Assessment & Differentiation: Design and administer age-appropriate formative and summative assessments, evaluating motor skill development, sportsmanship, participation, and fitness progression. Utilize data to differentiate instruction for varying physical abilities, motor skill levels, and developmental milestones.
  • Safety & Environment Management: Establish and maintain a safe, highly structured gym, playground, and athletic environment. Enforce safety rules for equipment use, supervise active play, maintain athletic equipment inventory, and apply proper first aid and risk management protocols.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Actively collaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, and school administration to integrate movement into the broader school curriculum and support school-wide wellness initiatives (e.g., Field Day, brain breaks, walk-a-thons). Maintain open, proactive communication with families regarding physical health, participation, and wellness strategies.
  • Professional Growth: Consistently participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with physical education pedagogy, adapted PE strategies, childhood fitness trends, and school safety/CPR certifications.
Qualifications
Education & Certification
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Certification: Valid state teaching credential/license in Physical Education (Grades K-8 or K-12). First Aid and CPR/AED certification required.
  • Experience: Prior student teaching or professional classroom/gymnasium experience at the elementary or middle school level is highly desirable.
  • Background: Clean background check and compliance with all state/district employment requirements.
Technical & Equipment Skills
  • Learning Management Systems (LMS): Proficiency with platforms like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Seesaw to share movement goals and communicate with families.
  • EdTech & PE Technology: Ability to integrate digital wellness tools, heart rate monitors, fitness tracking apps, or movement-based video software into PE units.
  • Data & Grading: Competency in using digital gradebooks and student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Infinite Campus) to track attendance, skill assessments, and fitness metrics.
  • Productivity Suites: Working knowledge of Google Workspace or Microsoft Office for lesson planning, scheduling, and curriculum mapping.
Core Skills & Competencies
  • Gymnasium & Outdoor Management: Proven ability to manage large classes of energetic students across diverse age groups (K-8) in both indoor gymnasiums and outdoor field spaces.
  • Differentiated Movement Instruction: Skill in adapting equipment, rules, and movement tasks to accommodate students with IEPs/504 plans, English Language Learners (ELL), motor delays, or adaptive PE needs.
  • Social-Emotional & Sportsmanship Coaching: Ability to teach conflict resolution, personal responsibility, fair play, emotional regulation, and teamwork through structured games and physical challenges.
  • Communication & Safety Culture: Strong communication skills with a firm commitment to student safety, active supervision, and building positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Cultural Competency: Sensitivity and responsiveness to diverse student backgrounds, ensuring a non-intimidating, inclusive movement culture where every student feels empowered to participate.
