Qualifications

  • English language proficiency as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
  • Selective Placement Factor: experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.
  • Specialized experience or education options to meet GS-5 requirements.
  • Education/experience combinations described: 4-year degree or 60 semester hours beyond 2nd year credited as experience.

Responsibilities

  • Identify patients, procure samples, and label specimens following procedures.
  • Perform routine venipuncture draws from patients.
  • Prepare samples for testing: labeling, centrifugation, decanting, and aliquoting.
  • Maintain supplies for phlebotomy and specimen procurement.
  • Educate patients on proper collection techniques.
  • Answer calls for laboratory service and relay information to technicians.
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as glucose fingerstick and urine dipstick.
  • Recognize and respond to adverse reactions (fainting, nausea, vomiting).
