Job summary

Atrium Health in Winston-Salem, NC is seeking a part-time phlebotomist to join our Laboratory team. This role operates 20 hours per week with variable nights, including Monday and Thursday overnight shifts, at the Winston Campus. You will collect blood samples, ensure proper patient identification, input orders into the LIS, and support specimen processing and routine testing. The position emphasizes safety, accuracy, teamwork, and ongoing education.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• CPR Certification is required.
• ASCP, AMT, ASPT or equivalent certification from an accredited Phlebotomy training program that includes a certification exam.

Responsibilities

• Adheres to hospital standards and promotes cooperative work environment.
• Assures accurate and timely collection of blood specimens.
• Ensures correct identification and delivery of patient samples to the correct lab sections.
• Follows safety and identification procedures with patients and specimens.
• Demonstrates phlebotomy knowledge and supports staff daily.
• Maintains inventory and supplies related to job activities.
• Performs clerical tasks including LIS data entry and report delivery.
• Performs specimen processing per laboratory policies.

Essential Functions

• Adheres to the general Medical Center standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
• Assures accurate and timely collection of blood specimens, according to departmental practices.
• Assures accurate identification and delivery of patient samples to appropriate lab sections.
• Follows proper safety and identification procedures when dealing with patients and/or specimens under any circumstance or environment.
• Demonstrates advanced knowledge of phlebotomy by serving as a willing resource to staff and applying knowledge in daily routines.
• Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education.
• Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department.
• Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approval policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases.
• Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.
• Provides age-appropriate specimen collection in accordance with age specific guidelines for school age, adolescents, early adults, middle adults and/or late adults.
• Maintains inventory and supplies related to job activities and monitors expiration dates.
• Performs clerical functions including entry of lab orders into the LIS, printing and delivery of reports, filing reports, preparing requisitions, and obtaining information or entering information into the laboratory or hospital computer system.
• Performs specimen processing in accordance with laboratory policies.
• May perform waived testing.
• May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

What You Will Need

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• CPR Certification required.
• ASCP, AMT, ASPT or equivalent certification from an accredited Phlebotomy training program that includes successful completion of a certification exam with passing scores.

Nice To Have (Not Required)

• Two-years of age-appropriate phlebotomy experience preferred.
