Job Description:

The Laboratory Support Operations Supervisor oversees the pre and post analytical laboratory operations for a hospital. This role involves managing the daily activities of personnel within the department, ensuring compliance with all standard operating procedures and regulations, and implementing comprehensive quality programs. The operations supervisor will collaborate with various departments to ensure optimal patient care and satisfaction and function as the primary contact for interdepartmental workflows and processes outside of the scope of the analytical supervisor. Must have a minimum of three of these targets to include: a facility with greater than 75 beds, 10,000 or greater patient days annually, inpatient revenue above $150K, average daily census greater than 40, and/or 4 or more specialty services.

Essential Functions
  • Supervise the technical and operational management of all pre and post analytical functions across multiple departments. Act as a resource in the daily operations and activities of multiple lab departments. Collaborate with the patient care department’s leadership team to evaluate service needs and volumes. Coordinate with transportation of specimens from submitting locations.
  • Maintains continuous 24/7 hospital laboratory services requiring multiple shifts of support staff including nights, weekends, and holidays. Evaluate and maintain staffing levels, assign daily work schedules, and plan/coordinate around emergency/disaster/surge situations.
  • Maintains competency across multiple disciplines. Monitor system for billing errors, making appropriate corrections and overseeing the operations of multiple disciplines within departments including exception handling, send-outs, registration, client services, waived testing, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g. CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, etc.), develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOP’s), participate in audits, inspections, and performance improvement initiatives. Maintains accurate documentation and reporting in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees Human Resource management functions including interviewing, selection, orientation, education/training, manage time sheets, performance evaluation, feedback, corrective action, support caregiver well-being initiatives and policy and procedure development.
  • Coordinate the installation of new technology within multiple departments to develop, implement, and teach new and evolving processes and changes and is responsible for sharing with hospital departments as appropriate.
  • Problem-solve to address issues relating to patient safety, care, and service. Support and represent lab interests in projects that enhance patient care access to bringing on new testing and participating in change control metrics.
  • Oversee supply and equipment inventory to maintain optimal supply levels and ensure timely equipment repairs and preventative maintenance. Assist in the development of capital planning and operating budgets.
  • Foster effective collaboration between interdepartmental hospital-based service lines and contribute as an active member of the department/unit team to support the achievement of both departmental and facility-wide goals. Integrate laboratory KPI projects with hospital-wide KPIs to ensure compliance with system-wide initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and professional development. Ensure coordination of care with other departments to promote the highest level of patient care and satisfaction. Provision of real-time follow-up with patient grievances
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines and establish departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Maintain section readiness for Joint Commission, CAP or CLIA inspections.

Physical Requirements
  • Ongoing need for employees to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typical includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
