Description

Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for collecting appropriate blood specimens from inpatients, outpatients, and off‑campus patients in a timely manner. In addition, supports the laboratory staff by receiving and directing all telephone and mail communications to appropriate departments or personnel, receiving and distributing specimens in accordance with MGH and Laboratory policies and procedures as well as CAP and federal/state regulations, maintaining established processes for record retention and retrieval and distribution of test results, and registering patients following established policies.

Responsibilities
  • Operations of assigned units.
  • Provides pre and post analytical expertise for the department through supervision; investigates problems or concerns and takes corrective action when necessary; monitors department PPID usage; ensures that devices are in working order; acts as resource person for troubleshooting problems; minimizes downtime; provides assistance as needed; keeps current on department policies.
  • Maintains department inventory of reagents and supplies; initiates purchase orders for approval and coordinates usage of supplies.
  • Oversees and manages all section functions, including flow of communications and correspondence, addressing open issues and ensuring smooth operations of reporting processes, coordinating all projects and activities, and managing the section resources in the most efficient, cost‑effective manner.
  • Coordinates with senior management to develop action plans and short‑term goals and objectives.
  • Supervision: reviews work and provides feedback; prepares and conducts annual performance evaluations; participates in staff recruitment and makes hiring decisions; maintains and revises the department policy and procedure manual according to regulatory standards and guidelines; writes new pre or post analytical policies and procedures; contributes to the general lab policy and procedure manual; participates effectively in administrative calls and general problem resolution; oversees orientation, supervision, and training of lab assistants; follows internal human resources policies and procedures; communicates policies and departmental objectives to staff; may recommend salary changes, promotions, transfers, discipline, termination, vacation schedules, leaves of absence, performance appraisals, and other personnel actions in coordination with HR; delegates effectively to others and authority appropriately.
  • Management of budget and inventory: manages the department within set budgets; ensures adequate inventory of phlebotomy and laboratory supplies so that daily operations are not interrupted; prepares departmental operational budget within designated time frame and provides fiscal management within the approved guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as required: maintains required job knowledge (e.g., licensure and credentials, continuing education); effectively manages training and orientation of new laboratory assistants and courier staff; completes all required competency assessments on time; attends mandatory in‑services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self‑education.
