Job summary

MedStar Health in Maryland seeks a phlebotomist to perform venipuncture and capillary collections, process specimens, and ensure proper labeling according to LIS procedures.

Responsibilities include verifying patient identities, obtaining necessary diagnoses, and maintaining a sanitary work area while supporting training of new staff and participating in quality initiatives.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of a hospital-approved phlebotomy course is required.
  • Six months phlebotomy experience is preferred.
  • CPH - Phlebotomy Technician Certification is preferred.
  • Maryland driver’s license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to achievement of department goals and adheres to policies, procedures, quality and safety standards.
  • Collects blood from patients per laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Ensures medically necessary diagnoses are submitted and ABN/signatures obtained when necessary.
  • Greets patients, verifies identity, and performs phlebotomy including skin and heel punctures when applicable.
  • Labels specimens accurately and maintains a sanitary work area.
  • Participates in training new associates and supports meetings and committees.

About the Job

Working hours for this role is 4am - 12:30pm, Every other Saturday and Sunday and 2 week days per week.

Training mandatory day shift for the first 2 weeks.

General Summary of Position

Performs all aspects of phlebotomy functions and specimen collections to include venous and capillary collections and/or glucose testing while following the proper standards and practices. Verifies patient insurance and performs basic data entry to register and accession in and/or out-patient orders while complying with the MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collects blood from patients according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Complies with MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan by ensuring the following: medically necessary diagnosis is submitted (ICD-10 Code/Descriptive Diagnosis) physician signature determine Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) obtains the patient signature if necessary prior to specimen collection.
  • Greets patients in a courteous and professional manner. Verifies correct patient identification in accordance with hospital policy. Performs phlebotomy proficiently (skin and heel punctures when applicable) on all patient types. Places physician orders correctly into LIS. Accurately labels patient specimens immediately after procedure is completed according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a good attendance record. Maintains effective working relationships with other departments and coworkers.
  • Maintains working area in a sanitary condition. Assists with the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and requests supplies as necessary.
  • Participates or assists in training new associates.
  • Responds to telephone calls with courtesy and efficiency.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • Completion of Hospital approved phlebotomy course, required.
Experience
  • Six months of phlebotomy experience, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification Phlebotomy certification, preferred.
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland and dependable vehicle for transportation preferred
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
