Job summary

MedStar Health in Maryland is seeking a PRN Phlebotomist to perform venous and capillary collections, glucose testing, and verify patient information and insurance. You will enter data and accession orders in LIS and ensure proper labeling of specimens, following MedStar Laboratory Compliance policies.

The role requires availability for evenings, overnight, and weekends; associates may train new staff, maintain a clean work area, and participate in quality improvement teams as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of a hospital-approved phlebotomy course is required.
  • Less than 1 year to 1 year and 6 months phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills and good verbal/written communication are required.

Responsibilities

About the Job

This is a PRN role. Working hours may vary based on departmental need; applicants must be available for evening, overnight, and weekend shifts.

General Summary of Position

Performs all aspects of phlebotomy functions and specimen collections, including venous and capillary collections and/or glucose testing, while following proper standards and practices. Verifies patient insurance and performs basic data entry to register and accession in‑ and out‑patient orders while complying with the MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collects blood from patients according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the following for MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan: medically necessary diagnosis is submitted (ICD‑10 Code/Descriptive Diagnosis), physician signature is obtained, and Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) is obtained with patient signature if necessary prior to specimen collection.
  • Greets patients in a courteous and professional manner, verifies correct patient identification in accordance with hospital policy, performs phlebotomy proficiently (skin and heel punctures when applicable) on all patient types, places physician orders correctly into LIS, and accurately labels patient specimens immediately after the procedure is completed according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a good attendance record and effective working relationships with other departments and coworkers.
  • Maintains the working area in a sanitary condition, assists with the care and maintenance of departmental equipment, and requests supplies as necessary.
  • Participates or assists in training new associates.
  • Responds to telephone calls with courtesy and efficiency.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi‑disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • Completion of a hospital‑approved phlebotomy course, required.
Experience
  • Less than 1 year and 6 months of phlebotomy experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPT – Phlebotomy Technician Certification (preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license in the State of Maryland and dependable vehicle for transportation preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
Hiring Range

USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /hr.
