Job summary

MedStar Health in Baltimore seeks a Phlebotomist to perform phlebotomy and specimen collection, including venous and capillary sampling, while ensuring proper data entry and compliance with the MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan.

You will verify insurance details, register orders, and label specimens accurately, following department procedures and safety standards. The role requires strong patient interaction skills and teamwork within a hospital setting.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • Completion of Hospital approved phlebotomy course, required.
  • Six months of phlebotomy experience, preferred.
  • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification Phlebotomy certification, preferred.
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland and dependable vehicle for transportation preferred

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of department goals and adheres to policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards.
  • Collects blood from patients according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Ensures proper submission of medically necessary diagnosis (ICD-10) and ABN when required; obtains patient signature if necessary.
  • Greets patients professionally; verifies patient identity; performs phlebotomy (skin/heel punctures where applicable).
  • Labels specimens accurately and promptly; enters orders into LIS as required.
  • Maintains sanitary work area; assists with equipment care and supply orders.
  • Participates in training new associates and in meetings or committees.
  • Represents department and hospital in community outreach and participates in quality improvement teams.

Working hours for this role is 4am - 12:30pm, Every other Saturday and Sunday and 2 week days per week.

General Summary Of Position

Verifies patient insurance and performs basic data entry to register and accession in and/or out-patient orders while complying with the MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collects blood from patients according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Complies with MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan by ensuring the following: medically necessary diagnosis is submitted (ICD-10 Code/Descriptive Diagnosis) physician signature determine Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) obtains the patient signature if necessary prior to specimen collection.
  • Greets patients in a courteous and professional manner. Verifies correct patient identification in accordance with hospital policy. Performs phlebotomy proficiently (skin and heel punctures when applicable) on all patient types. Places physician orders correctly into LIS. Accurately labels patient specimens immediately after procedure is completed according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a good attendance record. Maintains effective working relationships with other departments and coworkers.
  • Maintains working area in a sanitary condition. Assists with the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and requests supplies as necessary.
  • Participates or assists in training new associates.
  • Responds to telephone calls with courtesy and efficiency.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • Completion of Hospital approved phlebotomy course, required.
Experience
  • Six months of phlebotomy experience, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification Phlebotomy certification, preferred.
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland and dependable vehicle for transportation preferred
