Job summary

Mass General Brigham is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician at our Boston site to collect blood, urine, and nasal swabs under supervision. You will explain safety procedures, perform clerical tasks, and ensure patient privacy while adhering to HIPAA guidelines in a fast-paced laboratory setting.

The role includes rooming patients, selecting collection sites, labeling specimens, and coordinating with the Laboratory Support Services team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Pediatric Phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Graduate of a training program that includes phlebotomy with demonstrated competency preferred.
• Inpatient Phlebotomy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Check two patient identifiers and ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and patient identification card.
• Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
• Select appropriate specimen collection equipment.
• Select an appropriate site for blood collection.
• Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture.
• Collect specimens according to the order of draw.
• Label in the presence of the patient.
• Package and transport specimens.
• Monitor the patient and ensure bleeding has stopped and patient is stable.
• Review prior to collection a standard checklist including allergies and adverse history.
• Maintain patient privacy and follow HIPAA guidelines.
• With training, provide EKG, clerical and specimen transport functions.
• With training, provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations.
• Provide reception and clerical functions at Specimen Collection center front desk.
• Maintain adequate supply inventory and complete monthly checks.
• Satisfy annual continuing education and required trainings.
