Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System seeks a phlebotomist to collect blood samples by venipuncture or finger/heel sticks under supervision. You will ensure patient safety and comfort while following established standards and processing specimens manually or with automation.

Responsibilities include accurate specimen collection, proper labeling, data entry in EPIC, operating basic lab equipment, coordinating with staff, and managing supply inventories to prevent stockouts.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program preferred.
• Certification as a registered phlebotomist preferred.

Responsibilities

• Obtains venous and/or capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
• Uses computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information; correctly identifies and labels specimens.
• Performs accurate order entry and checks requisitions for proper data entry.
• Operates simple lab equipment such as centrifuge and microscope.
• Communicates with laboratory and medical staff to resolve specimen issues and labeling.
• Monitors pending work and resolves specimen issues.
• Sorts lab reports/mail and distributes them to appropriate mailboxes.
• Performs inventory and ordering of supplies; rotates stock to prevent outdating.
• Fills supply requests for client needs.
