Job summary

MercyOne in Northeast Iowa is hiring a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments in collecting, processing, and reporting tests essential for patient diagnosis and treatment. The role ensures accurate specimen handling, data integrity, and adherence to quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities include venipunctures and specimen labeling, LIS data entry, and collaboration with staff to maintain timely turnaround and efficient workflow within a large healthcare system.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions from internal and external customers.
• Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers and labels containers.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS and evaluates adequacy.
• Performs specimen processing and documentation as per protocols.
• Resolves problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures.
• Operates LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
• Contributes to lab operations by restocking supplies and participating in committees.
