Job summary

UChicago Medicine AdventHealth is seeking a PRN Phlebotomist to join the laboratory team. You will perform venipuncture and microtainer collection, ensure proper labeling, and prioritize specimens to maintain a smooth workflow.

The role requires reading, writing and speaking English, basic computer skills, and strict adherence to safety policies. Phlebotomy training is preferred, with BLS CPR and certification advantageous for certain positions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Phlebotomy training program required for certain positions.
• Phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Must read/write/speak English.
• Basic computer skills and MS Office familiarity.
• Phlebotomy certification (PBT/ASCP) preferred for some roles.

Responsibilities

• Transport hazardous waste from point of generation to storage area.
• Troubleshoot phlebotomy service concerns and coordinate workload.
• Support leadership with daily workflow and problem resolution.
• Perform venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately and efficiently.
• Ensure specimens are labeled correctly and orders received properly.
• Prioritize routine specimens using a first-in, first-out approach; handle stat orders as needed.
• Follow safety policies including PPE usage, handwashing, and chemical handling.
• Other duties as assigned.

Transports hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area, completing required training for proper handling and transport. May troubleshoot phlebotomy service concerns and coordinate daily workload assignments. Supports leadership with daily workflow and problem resolution. Serves as an example of professional phlebotomy performance. Performs venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately and efficiently. Ensures specimens are correctly labeled and orders are received properly. Prioritizes routine specimen receipt in the laboratory on a “first in – first out” basis, with stat and alert specimens prioritized before routine orders. Follows appropriate safety policies, including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling.

• Phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary) Preferred; completion of a phlebotomy training program Required for certain positions.
• Familiarity with using computers, telephone, fax, copier, printers, and various laboratory equipment including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank and microbiology analyzers, glucometers, incubators, environmental hood, monitored refrigerators and freezers, centrifuges, phlebotomy chairs, and supplies. Required for certain roles.
• Excellent verbal, written, and clerical skills. Required for specific job functions.

• High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
• Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]

Field of Study

• Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred

Work Experience

• Phlebotomy experience [Preferred]

Licenses and Certifications

• Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) [Preferred]
• Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) [Preferred]
