Job summary

The University of Kansas Health System is seeking a Phlebotomist at the Medical Pavilion to perform venipuncture, prepare specimens, and manage informed specimen labeling across ambulatory and inpatient settings.

Responsibilities include interpreting orders, ensuring patient identification, and collaborating with Lab Leadership. Strong English skills and a patient‑focused approach are required.

Qualifications

  • High School Graduate.
  • Less than 1 year (6 months) phlebotomy training OR 1+ year experience in specimen collection/processing OR completion of an external phlebotomy program.
  • Advanced phlebotomy skills for adults and pediatrics (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Performs blood draws by venipuncture according to standard protocol.
  • Interprets orders from the HIS and manual orders and identifies correct tube types.
  • Ensures proper patient identification and labeling of specimens.
  • Releases orders in ambulatory health system and processes specimens (centrifugation, aliquoting).
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and assists nursing staff as needed.
  • Mentors students, employees, patients and other providers as applicable.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries and provides customer service to callers.
  • May provide coverage at alternate locations to meet staffing needs.
