Summary

Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family-centered care and nursing services in accordance with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

Responsibilities
  1. Performs functions related to computer systems for proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
  2. Handles patient registration, identification, verification, and entering demographics, insurance info, and test orders following established policies.
  3. Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), including documentation and patient signatures.
  4. Performs clerical activities like record sorting, answering phones, and report delivery.
  5. Maintains standing orders, confirms expiration and renewals.
  6. Provides instructions to patients for tests and specimen collection, including special preparations.
  7. Schedules venipunctures and capillary blood punctures, ensuring proper collection procedures.
  8. Verifies patient identity and prepares for venipuncture, alerting staff to deviations or adverse conditions.
  9. Collects blood and other specimens, labels, transports, and maintains records.
  10. Performs additional duties related to specimen processing and documentation, adhering to hospital policies and universal precautions.
Education

High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification through NAA or completion of a formal program with internship demonstrating 100 venipunctures. Alternatively, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may suffice. Five or more years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered in lieu of certification.

Experience
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.
  • Interpersonal skills for patient communication and procedure explanation.
  • Knowledge of patient care considering aging, development, and cultural patterns.
  • Clerical skills for record keeping and data entry.
  • Familiarity with blood collection equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to distinguish colors for specimen processing.
  • Phlebotomy certification required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Involves walking between units, physical effort with uncooperative patients, exposure to odors and communicable diseases, manual dexterity for venipunctures.

Supervisory Responsibility

None.
