Summary:
Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units, including pediatric and adult outpatient patients. Transports specimens, completes basic records, and fosters patient and family-centered care aligned with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital's mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.
Responsibilities:
- Performs functions related to the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
- Handles patient registration, including patient identification, verification, entering demographics, insurance info, guarantor, PCP, ordering provider, test orders, diagnostic codes, and document scanning.
- Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), including obtaining supporting diagnostic codes, document review, patient signature, and scanning.
- Performs clerical activities such as follow-up on medical necessity, sorting and filing records, answering phones, report delivery, and receiving patients into clinical areas.
- Maintains and monitors standing orders for expiration and renewal, ensuring tasks are completed.
- Provides patients with test forms, instructions for special preparations, and may contact patients for additional information or to repeat tests.
- Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood draws based on test priority and type, utilizing computer-generated labels and reference materials to ensure proper specimen collection.
- Verifies patient identity and prepares patients for venipuncture, alerting staff to deviations or adverse conditions.
- Obtains blood samples via venipuncture or capillary puncture, may collect other specimens, and processes samples as needed.
- Collects samples for specialized tests, verifies volumes and timing, and monitors patient reactions.
- Performs bleeding times if required.
- Labels, wraps, transports samples, and maintains procurement records.
- Adheres to hospital policies and universal precautions.
- Performs additional functions with the computer system related to specimen collection and documentation, including patient registration, test ordering, and record management.
- Ensures all functions meet age-specific patient needs and follows procedures when obtaining samples at patients' homes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Other information:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Phlebotomy certification through NAA or completion of a recognized program with internship, or equivalent experience.
Experience:
- Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture on all age groups.
- Strong interpersonal, clerical, and technical skills, including knowledge of blood collection equipment and color recognition.
- Phlebotomy certification required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Inpatient care setting involving walking, physical effort, specimen handling, and adherence to infection control protocols. Manual dexterity required for venipunctures.
