Job Description

Collects blood from patients following established standards and practices. Assures the quality of the specimen. Assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient.

Job Responsibilities

1. Assess the physical condition of the site for blood collection; select appropriate equipment; draw blood from adult, pediatric, and infant patients; deliver specimens to the laboratory.
2. Interpret and verify orders, including patient identification; calculate the required quantity for diagnostic studies; label specimens according to policy.
3. Assess the patient's physical condition during phlebotomy and take appropriate actions; maintain phlebotomy supply levels.
4. Follow approved standard precautions, including aseptic techniques, use of protective gear, proper disposal of contaminated equipment, and other isolation precautions as directed; adhere to administrative guidelines in the operation of the Ambulatory Lab and Pre-Admission Testing.
5. Instruct patients on the collection of blood, urine, sputum, stool specimens, and nasal swabs; process specimens appropriately for the lab.
6. Identify and communicate problems to supervision.
7. Restock lab supplies.
8. Assess the type of blood work required for elective pre-op patients according to policy and requirements.
9. Perform related duties as required. All responsibilities noted here are considered essential functions under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Job Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or equivalent required.
2. Current Phlebotomy Technician Certification preferred, along with specialized certifications as needed.
3. 0-5 years of relevant technical experience required.
