Summary:

  • A Phlebotomist Laboratory Assistant II is trained on-the-job or through a structured Phlebotomy program to draw blood for diagnostic testing from patients of all ages. The role also includes processing various clinical specimens for laboratory testing and accessing patient records. (Location: Inpatient Phlebotomy - HUP, 3400 Spruce Street)
  • Shift: Every Weekend (Saturday & Sunday) from 4:30 am to 1:00 pm (16 hours weekly)

Responsibilities:

  • Identify patient development stages and communicate effectively with patients and visitors of all ages, considering cultural and developmental differences; listen and respond appropriately; introduce yourself professionally.
  • Enter patient demographics, test orders, and billing info accurately into computer systems; follow SOPs for specimen collection and problem-solving; perform venipuncture and micro techniques; perform specialized collections if needed.
  • Label specimens accurately; draw scheduled samples promptly; monitor patient reactions; process samples as assigned.
  • Follow SOPs for specimen processing; operate pneumatic tube system correctly; maintain logs and records accurately.
  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment; answer calls professionally; research inquiries; prepare specimens for special tests; stay updated on laboratory procedures.
  • Manage inventory; assist with training; perform daily equipment checks; adhere to safety and confidentiality policies; complete mandatory training; ensure adequate staffing.

Credentials: Certification as a PBT or MLA by recognized certifying bodies like ASCP; candidates without certification considered for Lab Assistant I.

Education or Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED required
  • Phlebotomy training and hospital/outpatient experience preferred; familiarity with Laboratory Information System advantageous.
