Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a phlebotomy technician to collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary methods, perform EKG and point-of-care testing, and manage specimen processing. The role requires a phlebotomy training program or equivalent experience, and requires BLS within 3 months of employment.

This non-exempt position offers a variable schedule with days, evenings, and nights, and may involve travel between campuses based on department needs.

Qualifications

• BLS certification within 3 months of employment and annual competencies.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy using approved techniques.
• Review physician orders to ensure tests meet Medical Necessity and prepare ABN with signatures.
• Perform EKG, pulse oximetry and point-of-care testing with quality control.
• Process specimens (centrifugation, pour-off, labeling, packaging).
• Provide patient and insurance information for registration in the ADT system.

Hiring Range:

$16.60 - $29.88

(based on a full time schedule of 40 hours per week).

Please note that the final offer will vary based on scheduled hours. Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

Collects blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary from patients. Performs EKG, pulse oximetry, and point-of-care testing on inpatients and outpatients as required.

Major Responsibilities:

• Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy procedures on patients using appropriate specimen collection equipment and techniques.
• Review requisition and orders from physicians to ensure appropriate tests are drawn and tests meet guidelines for Medical Necessity. Prepares Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for tests that do not meet Medical Necessity guidelines and obtains appropriate signatures from patient and self.
• Performs EKG, pulse oximetry and point-of-care testing procedures as requested and associated quality control and maintenance of instrumentation.
• Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging.
• Provides essential patient data and insurance information for registration of specimens. May create registration for outreach specimens in Hospital Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) system.

• High School graduate with successful completion from a recognized program for training in phlebotomy or prior documented experience performing phlebotomy.

License/Certification:

Required:

• Basic life support certification required within 3 months of employment.
• Maintenance of annual competencies in BLS.
