Job summary

Boston Children's Hospital is seeking a Phlebotomist to collect blood samples for diagnostic testing across ages. Responsibilities include entering orders into the LIS, selecting appropriate venipuncture sites and performing blood draws with patient comfort and safety in mind.

The role emphasizes accurate labeling, adherence to testing requirements, and collaboration with clinical teams. A High School diploma and phlebotomy certification are preferred, with opportunities across multiple campus

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Enter orders for tests into the LIS and gather necessary clinical information.
• Perform phlebotomy including venipuncture while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
• Monitor patients for adverse reactions and provide appropriate care.
• Prepare tubes, paperwork, labels and ensure proper handling per test requirements.
• Monitor and restock supplies and notify when reorders are needed.
• Provide excellent customer service and participate in quality control and continuous improvement.
• Support teamwork across departments and hospitals.

Job description

Position/Department Summary: Collects blood from patients of all ages for the purpose of diagnostic testing.

Key Responsibilities:

• Completes order entry of tests into the LIS. Gathers and documents necessary clinical information. Refers questions regarding information to appropriate clinician.
• Selects appropriate venous puncture site based on knowledge of pathophysiology. Performs phlebotomy for collection of blood for clinical and research testing.
• Monitors individuals to ensure comfort, safety and adequate blood flow. Monitors individuals for adverse reactions.
• Select and prepare tubes/containers, paperwork, labels and forms. Has knowledge of testing requirements for clinical tests including special handling requirements.
• Monitors and stock supplies. Notify appropriate staff when reorder levels are reached.
• Provides positive customer service that supports departmental and hospital operations. Performs and records quality control measures to insure accurate equipment performance, making and documenting necessary adjustments. Participates in continuous improvement efforts.
• Contributes to teamwork within and between departments and organizations.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School / GED required

Experience:

• At least 6 months Phlebotomy experience preferred

Licensure:

• Current certification as a phlebotomist by a national certifying agency (e.g. ASCP) is preferred

Shift/hours:

• Monday-Friday: 9:00am-5:30pm (when the employee is not Floating, w/ rotating weekends and holidays. Floating time(s) varies, but usually anywhere between 7:00am - 8:00pm.
• Boston Campus and Satellite locations: Martha Eliot, 2 Brookline Place, 333 Longwood, Fegan, Peabody, Lexington, Waltham, Weymouth, Needham and North Dartmouth
• Float position

Incentives:

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
