Job summary

OSF HealthCare is seeking a Phlebotomist II to collect blood and other specimens in a hospital setting. You will obtain supplies, verify patient IDs, perform venipuncture and skin punctures, and transport specimens to the laboratory for analysis.

The role works independently and as part of a team, supporting lab operations and patient care while maintaining professionalism amidst interruptions. Certification and strong computer skills are preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • PBT (ASCP) certification preferred/required.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain blood and other specimens per policies.
  • Label specimens and transport to the lab.
  • Perform venipuncture and skin punctures.
  • Maintain professional relations with patients, staff and physicians.
  • Assist leadership when Lead is absent; help set priorities.
  • Handle clerical/computer duties related to the laboratory.

Expected pay for this position is $18.27 - $20.29/hour. Actual pay will be determined by experience, skills and internal equity. This is an Hourly position.

Uncertified Phlebotomists may be considered for the role but their expected pay would be $17.66 - $19.63/hour.

Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: The Phlebotomist II obtains blood and other specimens according to established policies and procedures from any location where patients may be present for laboratory testing. In doing so, obtains needed supplies, verifies patient identification, prepares skin sites, and performs venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques. Labels specimens and transports same to laboratory for analysis. This position works independently and as a part of a team, performs clerical and/or computer duties associated with the laboratory, and provides timely specimen collection and routing of laboratory specimens. Maintains professional relationship with patients, staff, and physicians. Duties may vary by assigned area and/or shift. In the absence of a Lead, the Phlebotomist II may assist department leadership by performing essential lead role responsibilities. May assist in determining work priorities, may prepare daily work assignments, and may serve as a resource person for personnel resolving operational and patient care problems.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED
Licenses/Certifications
  • PBT (ASCP)
Other Skills/Knowledge
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field
Licenses/Certifications
  • CPR Certification through the American Heart Association
Experience
  • At least 6 months of experience in a team-oriented environment or customer service role
  • Experience working with an electronic medical record (EMR) system, such as Epic
