Job Summary
Under the direction of phlebotomy management, performs diverse support functions including phlebotomy to ensure accurate test results and a quick turnaround time. Positions supporting Patient Service Centers and client offices are required to provide phlebotomy services to these locations as determined by department needs and may be assigned to different locations and/or different schedules without a 30-day notice.

Essential Functions
- Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures to obtain adequate samples from patients. Responsible for proper patient identification, correct specimen labeling, and necessary documentation. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to evaluate and select proper collection methods for age-specific patients.
- Supports laboratory activities related to testing (phlebotomy, specimen collection, computer order entry, and specimen processing) to ensure accurate result reporting and quick turnaround time.
- Performs processing functions to support laboratory testing, including verification, accessioning, aliquoting, processing, batching send-out testing, adding/canceling tests, distributing, storing, and disposing of specimens.
- Adheres to compliance policies related to job duties, including presenting the Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) of non-coverage prior to outpatient services.
- Performs observational competency assessments of all support staff under the guidance of phlebotomy leadership using established criteria.
- Maintains department equipment and inventory to ensure proper supplies are available.
- Works well without direct supervision.
- Participates in:
- Patient and Family-Centered Care Culture
- Quality Improvement/process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and CAP surveys as applicable
- Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO)
- Friend-at-Work program and assists in training new hires as applicable/assigned
- Staff and committee meetings as assigned - Uses laboratory resources efficiently, completing tasks accurately and timely, and being mindful of cost and waste.
- Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Required High School Diploma or equivalent
- Preferred Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy Course and externship
- Required completion of a phlebotomy training program
- 6 months relevant experience preferred; dependent on assignment
- Driver's License for Michigan outpatient and nursing home positions; required upon hire
- CRT-Phlebotomy Technician (NHA) preferred; upon hire
