Job Summary
Under the direction of phlebotomy management, performs diverse support functions including phlebotomy to ensure accurate test results and quick turnaround times. Positions supporting Patient Service Centers and client offices are required to provide phlebotomy services at these locations as determined by department needs and may be assigned to different locations and/or schedules without a 30-day notice.

Essential Functions
- Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures to obtain samples from patients, ensuring proper patient identification, specimen labeling, and documentation. Evaluates and selects appropriate collection methods based on patient age.
- Supports laboratory testing activities, including specimen collection, computer order entry, and specimen processing, to ensure accurate results and quick turnaround.
- Performs processing functions such as verification, accessioning, aliquoting, batching, adding/canceling tests, distributing, storing, and disposing of specimens.
- Adheres to compliance policies, including presenting the Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) of non-coverage prior to outpatient services.
- Conducts observational competency assessments of support staff under the guidance of phlebotomy leadership using established criteria.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and inventory to ensure availability of supplies.
- Works effectively without direct supervision.
- Participates in initiatives such as patient and family-centered care, quality improvement, data collection, QC documentation, CAP surveys, HRO activities, and training new hires as applicable.
- Uses resources efficiently, manages time effectively, and minimizes waste of supplies and funds.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Preferred: Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy Course and externship completed.
- Completion of a phlebotomy training program required.
- Six months of relevant experience preferred, depending on assignment.
- Driver's License for Michigan outpatient and nursing home positions required upon hire.
- CRT-Phlebotomy Technician certification from NHA preferred upon hire.
Physical Demands
- Seldom to frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs, with specific weight limits for various activities.
- Standing, walking, bending, reaching, and other physical activities required with varying frequency.
