Job Summary

Responsible for collecting patient specimens using venipuncture, capillary, and other approved collection techniques while ensuring specimen integrity and patient safety. This position receives, processes, labels, and prepares laboratory specimens for testing and analysis. The role provides laboratory clerical and customer service support, assists with workflow coordination, and maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment. This position contributes to efficient laboratory operations through accurate specimen handling, regulatory compliance, and excellent customer service.


Shift:

Mornings, 4:00 AM – 7:30 AM


Essential Functions


  • Performs venipuncture and capillary blood collections accurately and efficiently according to established procedures.


  • Verifies patient identification and ensures specimens are accurately labeled and documented.


  • Receives, processes, and prepares laboratory specimens for testing and analysis.


  • Maintains specimen integrity through proper handling, storage, transport, and processing procedures.


  • Prioritizes specimen processing using established guidelines, ensuring stat and urgent specimens are processed ahead of routine orders when appropriate.


  • Performs laboratory clerical functions including order entry, specimen tracking, documentation, and customer service support.


  • Provides assistance with daily workflow coordination and helps resolve routine specimen collection and processing concerns.


  • Supports laboratory leadership with workload management and operational problem resolution as needed.


  • Serves as a role model for professional phlebotomy practice and customer service excellence.


  • Transports hazardous waste from the point of generation to designated storage areas in accordance with safety procedures and regulatory requirements.


  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of workstations, collection areas, laboratory equipment, and supplies.


  • Operates laboratory and office equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.


  • Follows infection prevention, safety, hazardous material handling, and personal protective equipment requirements.


  • Maintains compliance with laboratory policies, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.


  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.


  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work schedules.


  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and varying schedules as needed.


  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand conversational English.


  • Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.


  • Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture and capillary specimen collection techniques.


  • Ability to accurately collect, label, process, and document patient specimens.


  • Knowledge of specimen handling, transportation, and laboratory processing procedures.


  • Familiarity with laboratory and office equipment, including computers, telephones, fax machines, copiers, printers, centrifuges, phlebotomy equipment, and related laboratory instruments.


  • Strong verbal, written, customer service, and clerical skills.


  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when interacting with patients, providers, and team members.


  • Knowledge of safety procedures, infection prevention practices, hazardous material handling, and use of personal protective equipment.


  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and established procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.



Education


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.


  • Technical or Vocational School training preferred.



Field of Study


  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.



Work Experience


  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.



Licenses and Certifications


  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification preferred.


  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT-ASCP) Certification preferred.
