Summary

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities

1. Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and conduct decontamination.
2. Update patient information as required.
3. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
4. Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously.
5. Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
6. Understand all physicians' orders fully.
7. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately.
8. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
9. Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for 100% accuracy.
10. Package specimens for transport, store samples at required temperatures, and ensure proper labeling and handling to maintain specimen integrity.
11. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
12. Attend annual department training sessions.
13. Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
• At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 0-2 years of relevant experience.
