Job summary

Billings Clinic in Billings, MT, is seeking a Phlebotomist I (per diem) to collect and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. The role requires venipuncture and capillary collection with minimal patient discomfort, and handles patients from infant to geriatric. Per diem status with variable shifts.

Performs duties to ensure specimen integrity, supports a collaborative team, and may be eligible for a sign-on incentive. Starting wage is $17.00–$21.25 per hour, with per diem hours as needed.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years or older.
• Phlebotomy certification or experience preferred.
• BLS within 180 days of employment.
• Strong patient care and safety focus.
• Flexible, per diem shifts and variable hours.

Responsibilities

• Collects and prepares specimens (blood, urine, etc.) for testing.
• Performs venipuncture and capillary collection with patient comfort in mind.
• Ensures proper patient identification and specimen handling per policy.
• Uses computerized systems to enter orders and track results.
• Coordinates with clinicians and nursing staff for orders and tests.
• Provides backup support across shifts as needed.

Phlebotomist I Billings Clinic (BILLINGS CLINIC HOSPITAL)

Hours per Pay Period: 0.01 = per diem (as needed) (Non-Exempt)

Starting Wage: $17.00 - $21.25

The incumbent in this position is responsible for collecting and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis. Accurately obtains blood samples via venipuncture and capillary collection procedures with minimum patient discomfort. Ensures age-appropriate care is provided to patients from infant to geriatric. Ensures specimen integrity by following the laboratory’s procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing. Promotes quality patient/client relations and creates supportive climate. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations.

This position may be eligible for a sign on incentive.

Essential Job Functions

• Collects and prepares patient specimens to include blood, urine, sputum, and cultures. Coordinate specimen collection with physicians and/or nursing staff when draws must be taken from patients with central lines, groshong catheters and IV assisted draws.
• Adhere to established guidelines and procedures for accurate patient and specimen identification, identifying non-compliance situations and take the necessary steps to bring situation into compliance.
• Utilize computerized systems to enter laboratory orders, patient charges, generate reports, answer inquiries and resolve problems.
• Coordinate with physicians, nursing staff and other health care providers for clarification of orders, laboratory tests available, test result turnaround times, and for coordination of laboratory special procedures involving other health care providers.
• Refers questions regarding types of tests being performed and other aspects of care to the appropriate health care provider. Provides instructions to patients regarding specimen collection to be completed in the home environment. Coordinate with patients and physicians regarding collection errors and initiate appropriate follow-up measures to correct errors.
• Provide back up to laboratory positions on days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and as needed. Duties include answering phones, requisition entry, routing patient orders, e.g., add-on orders, and preparation of specimens for testing.
• Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and a neat, orderly and clean work area.
• Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
• Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.
• Performs all other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• 16 years of age minimum
• Completion of Phlebotomy Certification course work or phlebotomy experience preferred but not required. On the job training available
• Courses in mathematics and science, preferred

• BLS within 180 days of employment
