Job summary

Billings Clinic is seeking a Phlebotomist I to join our Lab team in Billings, MT. You will collect and prepare specimens from patients across age groups and ensure sample integrity for accurate testing.

Daily duties include venipuncture, coordinating with clinicians, entering orders in our systems, and maintaining a clean, organized work area. Training is provided; eligible for sign-on incentives. The position offers a day shift with weekend rotation and competitive starting wage.

Qualifications

• 16 years of age minimum.
• Completion of Phlebotomy Certification course or phlebotomy experience preferred; on-the-job training available.
• BLS within 180 days of employment.
• Math and science coursework preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collect and prepare patient specimens to include blood, urine, sputum, and cultures; coordinate collection with physicians and nursing staff.
• Adhere to guidelines for patient/ specimen identification and compliance.
• Utilize computerized systems to enter orders, charges, generate reports, and resolve inquiries.
• Coordinate with physicians, nursing staff and other health care providers for orders and test coordination.
• Provide back-up coverage to laboratory positions on various shifts and assist with other duties as needed.
• Maintain inventory and keep a neat, clean work area.

Shift: Day, Weekends

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours every two weeks (Non-Exempt)

Starting Wage: $17.00 - $21.25

The incumbent in this position is responsible for collecting and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis. Accurately obtains blood samples via venipuncture and capillary collection procedures with minimum patient discomfort. Ensures age-appropriate care is provided to patients from infant to geriatric. Ensures specimen integrity by following the laboratory's procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing. Promotes quality patient/client relations and creates supportive climate. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations. This position may be eligible for a sign on incentive.

Essential Job Functions

• Collects and prepares patient specimens to include blood, urine, sputum, and cultures. Coordinate specimen collection with physicians and/or nursing staff when draws must be taken from patients with central lines, groshong catheters and IV assisted draws.
• Adhere to established guidelines and procedures for accurate patient and specimen identification, identifying non-compliance situations and take the necessary steps to bring situation into compliance.
• Utilize computerized systems to enter laboratory orders, patient charges, generate reports, answer inquiries and resolve problems.
• Coordinate with physicians, nursing staff and other health care providers for clarification of orders, laboratory tests available, test result turnaround times, and for coordination of laboratory special procedures involving other health care providers.
• Refers questions regarding types of tests being performed and other aspects of care to the appropriate health care provider. Provides instructions to patients regarding specimen collection to be completed in the home environment. Coordinate with patients and physicians regarding collection errors and initiate appropriate follow-up measures to correct errors.
• Provide back up to laboratory positions on days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and as needed. Duties include answering phones, requisition entry, routing patient orders, e.g., add-on orders, and preparation of specimens for testing.
• Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and a neat, orderly and clean work area.
• Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic's mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations.
