Job description

Description

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, phlebotomy position located at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

Must be able to work a varied schedule. Start times can vary between 4am - 10:30am and end between 8am - 7pm. Example shifts include 4am - 12:30pm; 5am - 1:30pm; 8am - 4:30pm; 9am - 5:30pm or 10:30am - 7pm.

May alternate between inpatient and outpatient. Will also need to work every other Saturday and Sunday.

The Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Phlebotomist provides expert phlebotomy services and must demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills. The phlebotomist must have the ability to function as part of a highly effective team that consistently puts “Patients First”.

The Phlebotomist is responsible for venipuncture collection and specimen processing. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to order entry in multiple systems, verification of test result receipt, patient information retrieval, and lab reception/clerical duties.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age-related standards and departmental policies, protocols, and procedures.
  2. Demonstrates AIDET model and optimizes patient safety to reduce healthcare errors.
  3. Receives and reviews physician orders; ensures all necessary information is included. Enters accurate orders for lab tests according to policies.
  4. Provides post-phlebotomy patient care and communication.
  5. Processes specimens promptly to ensure sample integrity, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging for transport.
  6. Reviews refrigerator temperatures and QC/QA records; reports issues and records findings accordingly.
  7. Operates and maintains lab equipment; follows up on outstanding orders and communicates statuses.
  8. Notifies Laboratory and/or Physician of specimen procurement issues.
  9. Maintains a safe work environment, adhering to biohazard waste procedures and proper storage.
  10. Performs clerical duties including order entry, result verification, patient info retrieval, and inventory management.
  11. Uses resources efficiently, participates in cost reduction and process improvement efforts.
  12. Completes continuing education and competency assessments.
  13. Demonstrates teamwork and professional interaction.
  14. Uses critical thinking and sound judgment to resolve issues.
  15. Adheres to organizational policies on ethical practices.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification from a recognized organization, or training from a medical institution, or one or more years of healthcare phlebotomy experience, or CMA certification.

Preferred:

  • Experience with diverse patient populations.
  • Experience in processing lab specimens and operating centrifuges.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
