Job summary

ScionHealth is seeking a Phlebotomist to perform venipunctures and related specimen collection tasks, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation. You will prepare specimens for laboratory testing, maintain clean work areas, and follow infection control protocols while interacting professionally with patients.

You will log specimens in the LIS, assist with clerical tasks, and participate in training and quality assurance to support safe, compassionate care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program preferred.
• Phlebotomy Certification preferred; BLS may be required by facility policy.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures to collect blood specimens as ordered.
• Properly labels, logs, and processes specimens according to laboratory protocols.
• Prepares collection trays and ensures cleanliness and restocking of work areas.
• Provides clear instructions to patients regarding collection procedures and tests.
• Monitors patient condition during and after specimen collection to ensure safety.
• Documents specimen collection in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Assists with clerical tasks including filing, data entry, and managing patient records.
• Ensures compliance with infection control and safety protocols in all patient interactions.
• Responds to inquiries from patients, staff, and other departments regarding laboratory services.
• Participates in training, quality assurance, and continuing education as required.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required


• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program preferred

Licenses/Certifications

• Phlebotomy Certification preferred


• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within timeframe required by facility policy

Experience

• Six (6) months of acute care phlebotomy experience or one (1) year experience in outpatient lab setting preferred.


• Certain facilities may require prior laboratory experience based on operational needs, staffing models, or complexity of services provided.
