Job summary

MLK Community Healthcare in Los Angeles, CA is seeking a Phlebotomist responsible for collecting specimens from patients and assisting the Clinical Laboratory Scientist as available. You will support specimen processing, data entry in LIS, and ensure quality testing to deliver accurate results for patient care.

This role requires a High School diploma, 6 months of blood collection experience (3 years preferred), certification to work with LIS, and BLS from the American Heart Association.

Qualifications

• Must have six months of experience in blood specimen collection; three years preferred.
• Proficient with LIS and computer applications.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Responsibilities

• Restock phlebotomy supplies for all three shifts.
• Perform clerical duties as needed.
• Communicate with coworkers, hospital personnel, and physicians at all times.
• Maintain coverage of the laboratory to ensure adequate patient care, including last-minute schedule changes.
• Collect blood specimens from inpatients using venipuncture or skin puncture according to policies.
• Inventory, report, and restock phlebotomy supplies to maintain continuity.
• Deliver specimens to the lab as needed.
• Data entry and proficiency with LIS; use manual backup when necessary.
• Assist customers with LIS information.
• Keep the workplace clean and organized.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collection of specimens from patients. The phlebotomist is also cross‑trained to assist the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) when possible; assigned to assist in the specimen processing and filing. This person will report to the Phlebotomy Lead and Lab Manager Implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians and hospital staff at all times. Assures quality of work, workflow, turn‑around‑time; assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; accepts suggestions and corrections and adjusts to changing situations. This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that thisindividualwill demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values andshall support theHospital’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assures that phlebotomy supplies are restocked for all three shifts.
• Responsible for all clerical duties.

• Collects samples from inpatients using standard venipuncture or skin puncture techniques according to established policies and procedures.
• Inventories, reports and restocks all phlebotomy testing supplies to ensure continuity of activities.
• Delivers specimens to the lab as needed.
• Responsible for data entry and appropriate proficiency using the Lab Information System (LIS) Computer systems.
• Is proficient in using manual backup to the Lab Information System (LIS).
• Assist customers with LIS Information.
• Assures that the workplace is clean and neat.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent

B. Qualifications/Experience

• 6 months of experience required in blood specimen collections; 3 years preferred. Internal candidates with Current CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License will be considered.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

• Proficient with LIS and computer applications
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association.
• Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
