Job summary

UPMC Shadyside is seeking a full-time Phlebotomist to join our Short Stay Unit. You will collect specimens from inpatients and outpatients, perform venipunctures, heelsticks and fingerstick collections, and ensure accurate labeling and handling of samples.

Shifts available 4:30 am–3:00 pm or 11:30 am–10:00 pm, with a mix of both and every-other-weekend rotation. Under supervision of Medical Technologists, you may assist with clerical tasks and LIS data entry as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred. Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy is preferred.
• Medical terminology knowledge and LIS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to inquiries promptly.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick; instruct patients as needed.
• Demonstrates dependability and prioritizes tasks to meet department needs in cooperation with staff.
• Transports and handles specimens following safety procedures; maintains accurate specimen labeling and tracking.
• Performs related clerical duties and enters demographic information and test orders into LIS as required.
• Trains new staff or students as applicable and disseminates information to team.
