Job summary

Community Blood Center in Overland Park, KS is seeking a Donor Room Assistant to interview donors, evaluate eligibility and perform phlebotomy under SOPs. You will measure vital signs, label materials and ensure post-donation safety while maintaining confidentiality and delivering excellent service.

Flex hours are required; a Medical Assistant degree or phlebotomy certification is preferred, and a valid driver’s license may be needed depending on assignment.

Responsibilities

• Performs donor interview and evaluates suitability for donation per SOP.
• Determines donor hemoglobin by finger-stick sample.
• Takes and documents donor blood pressure, pulse and temperature.
• Performs blood collection procedures according to SOPs.
• Attends to donor's comfort and safety post donation and notifies supervisor of reactions.
• Maintains confidentiality of donor information.
• Labels all blood collection materials according to SOP.
• Cares for blood after collection and transports as needed.
• Assists in unloading, assembling, maintaining, dismantling and reloading equipment and supplies.
• Complies with CBC safety policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates excellent customer service when dealing with donors and staff.
• Exhibits professionalism in dress, grooming and hygiene.
• Maintains prompt attendance and communicates in English.

$2,500 Sign on Bonus Available.

Responsibilities

• Performs donor interview and evaluates suitability of donor for donation based on current Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) criteria.
• Determines donor hemoglobin by obtaining a finger-stick sample.
• Takes and documents donor blood pressure, pulse and temperature.
• Performs blood collection procedures according to SOPs, including Quality Control, skin preparation, phlebotomy, obtaining tube samples and removing needles.
• Attends to donor's comfort and safety post donation, including those having reactions or complications to the procedure and notifying the Collection Supervisor.
• Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding donors.
• Labels all blood collection materials according to SOP.
• Cares for blood after collection, including segmenting, providing temporary storage and transportation to the center, when necessary.
• Assists in unloading, assembling, maintain, dismantling and reloading of equipment and supplies (if applicable).
• Complies with CBC safety policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates excellent customer service when dealing with donors, members of the community and co-workers.
• Exhibits professionalism in dress, personal grooming and hygiene.
• Maintains prompt and regular attendance.
• Must be able to confidently communicate and interpret intermediate information in English to all members of the public and CBC staff.

Other Functions

• Answer donor questions regarding donor criteria and blood donations.
• Performs data entry when donors present to donate (as applicable).
• Completes paperwork relating to daily operations.
• Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
• Stays current with all changes by atteneding all sheduled in-services.
• Restocks supplies as needed.
• Assists with special projects and other duties as assigned relevant to the position.
• Must have and maintain a valide driver's license and clean driving record. All tickets, suspension must be reported to supervisor.

Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Medical Assistant degree preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Experience

Prefer an individual with at least 6 months experience in:

• A health-related field, and
• Phlebotomy.

Licenses/Certifications

• Mobile Staff: Must have and maintain a valid operator's license (MO class E; KS class C)
• Fixed Site Staff: Must have and maintain a valid driver's license

Knowledge

• Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
• Proficient in all duties related to Donor Room Assistant.

Skills & Abilities

• Good verbal skills to successfully communicate with donors, chairpersons, community, and co-workers.
