Qualifications

  • 2+ years of phlebotomy experience required, drug screen collection preferred.

Job Description

This is a full-time position: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm, with rotating Saturday shifts from 7am - 1pm.

Essential Job Functions
  • Uses appropriate aseptic technique to draw blood cultures.
  • Processes Stat specimens according to Summit Health SOP.
  • Prepares collection containers with preservatives and provides instructions for proper collection at home (Urine & Stool). Measures and records volume for 24-hr collections.
  • Collects COC Urine Drug Screen properly.
  • Administers and collects H. pylori Breath tests properly.
  • Handles orders on minors appropriately.
  • Completes paperwork and labels specimens for OVH Blood Bank correctly.
  • Processes satellite specimens and delivers them to the appropriate department.
  • Monitors inventory and replenishes supplies in the phlebotomy room and storage area.
  • Deletes/cancels orders with proper documentation and ensures correct patient charge deletion.
  • Recalls patients for follow-up or error correction, documenting callbacks in the lab logbook.
  • Uses LIS for all applicable functions, including downtime procedures.
  • Adapts work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs.
  • Demonstrates competency in adult, pediatric, and infant phlebotomy, skin punctures, and bleeding times, including proper documentation and patient care.
General Job Functions
  • Checks in patients at satellite labs, including scheduling.
  • Processes lab and office specimens for transport.
  • Contacts courier for Stat pickups.
  • Performs, logs, and reports Rapid Strep and Hemoccult tests, notifying physicians of critical results.
  • Trains new staff on lab policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Endurance for typing, standing, bending, walking.
  • Exposure to sharps, latex, and potentially combative patients/visitors.
Blood-borne Pathogens and Safety
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, and non-intact skin or tissue specimens.
  • Contact with patients or specimens possible, with unplanned exposure risks.
Education, Certification, and Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years of phlebotomy experience required; drug screen collection preferred.
  • Ability to perform testing at satellite locations.
  • Phlebotomy Technician Certification through NHA preferred; may be required at certain locations.
  • CLA Certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA, lab requirements, and skills in phlebotomy, data entry, and phone etiquette.
  • Attention to detail, critical thinking, multitasking, and effective communication skills required.
Travel
  • Travel to satellite locations as needed.
