Overview
A healthcare services provider is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist for a contract role based in Asheville, NC. This position plays a key part in patient care by ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient specimen collection and handling across multiple local sites. The assignment is projected to last approximately 3 months.
What you'll do
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, and operate centrifuge equipment
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures
- Update patient information accurately
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and courteously to patients
- Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
- Understand and follow physicians' orders fully
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
- Package specimens properly for transport
- Store specimens at required temperatures and follow protocol‑specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
- Attend annual department trainings
- Answer telephone calls and relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
- Float to other locations in Asheville and travel to Hendersonville and Clyde as needed
Required qualifications
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required in some states)
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting
- Minimum 2 years of experience
- Adult and geriatric experience required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- High School Diploma or GED
- Clean driving record and reliable transportation
- Must be available for an 8-hour shift between 6AM and 6PM, Monday through Friday
