Qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, and operate centrifuges as part of daily duties.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures.
• Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients clearly and courteously.
• Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Follow physicians' orders accurately.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimens and manage labeling, centrifugation, splitting, and freezing as required.
• Check all test requisitions or labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer calls and relay lab results to satisfy inquiries.

What you'll do

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, and operate centrifuges as part of daily duties
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures
• Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
• Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
• Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
• Package specimens for transport, store samples at required temperatures, and follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
