Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities.
  • Update patient information as needed.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods to patients.
  • Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understand and follow physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, label accurately, and follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Overview

What you'll do
