Job Title: Phlebotomist

Location: UPMC Jameson, New Castle, PA. We are hiring a flex full-time Phlebotomist for daylight, afternoon, and occasionally midnight shifts. No on-call or travel required. The position involves rotating weekends and holidays.

Purpose:

This role involves accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients. Collected samples are used for laboratory testing essential for patient diagnosis and treatment. The Phlebotomist may also perform clerical, courier, and computer functions vital to laboratory operations, working under the supervision of Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities:

1. Interact courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers; respond promptly to telephone inquiries.
2. Procure blood specimens via venipuncture, heel stick, and fingerstick following proper patient identification procedures. Instruct patients on collection procedures as needed and may collect samples other than blood.
3. Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, recognizing priorities to meet department needs and respecting authority.
4. Transport specimens from collection sites to the laboratory following safety procedures, including at off-site locations.
5. Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions.
6. Perform clerical duties, including data entry, test ordering, and billing, ensuring accuracy of patient and sample information.
7. Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as assigned.
8. Report any unusual or problematic incidents to technical staff, supervisors, or pathologists.
9. If qualified, perform arterial puncture following strict guidelines.
10. Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials efficiently and cost-effectively.
